Pathway Planner
How IB subject choices affect the route into medicine
Pathway Planner is a dated report that shows how your child's IB Diploma subject choices affect the route into medicine in the UK, the US and Canada. Every rule and number in the report links to the university or government page it came from, so you can check each one yourself.
The report is meant for parents of students in Year 9, 10 or 11 at an IB school. At the Hong Kong schools we checked, Diploma subject choices are made between February and May of Year 11, and a choice made then can rule out some UK medical schools later.

Part of a sample report
An invented student with two subject plans. Plan A has Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics at Higher Level (HL). Plan B has Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics at HL.
| School | Plan A | Plan B |
|---|---|---|
| Bristol | Met | Met |
| Edinburgh | Missing Biology | Met |
| Imperial | Missing HL Biology | Met |
| Manchester | Met | Met |
Of the 14 UK schools whose pages were read, Plan A meets the subject rules at 6 and Plan B meets them at 14. Rules were read on 20 October 2026.
What the report shows
You enter one to three Diploma subject plans that your child is considering. For each plan, the report compares the plan with the published subject requirements of 14 UK medical schools. Those schools are Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Imperial, King's College London, Leeds, Leicester, Manchester, Newcastle, Oxford, Sheffield, Southampton and UCL.
For each school and each plan, the report gives one of three results:
- Met The plan has the subjects, levels and courses the school names.
- Missing The report names the subject or level the plan lacks.
- On hold The school's page could not be read, disagrees with another page, or covers a different entry year. The report shows what it found instead of a result.
Beside each result, the report repeats any published limit on international applicants and lists the conditions it did not check, e.g., grades and admission tests.
The report also explains how medicine works in the US and Canada, where it is usually a second degree. It lists sourced costs and deadlines, and it has a fixed section of general visa information with links to government pages.
What the report does not do
- It does not predict admission or give chances. It compares subjects with published rules.
- It does not check grades, predicted scores or test results.
- It does not give immigration advice. The visa section is the same for every family and links to official pages.
- It does not cover A-levels, AP, subjects other than medicine, or countries other than the UK, the US and Canada.
- It does not say which plan is best. It shows how your plans differ, so you can talk it through with your school counselor.

What we ask for
The form asks for your child's year group, curriculum, the countries you're interested in, one to three Diploma subject plans, the expected year of finishing school, and your email address. It does not ask for your child's name, date of birth, school, nationality, passport or visa status.
We keep your email address and the link between your report and the rules it used until 31 December of your child's final Diploma year, so we can send a correction if one is needed. Then we delete them. The full privacy notice and the name of the payment provider will be posted here before orders open.
How the report stays neutral
Pathway Planner takes no commission, referral fee, sponsorship, advertising or paid inclusion from any university, agent, school or test provider. No school is ranked, and schools are listed by country and then in alphabetical order.
Not an admission guarantee
This report describes published rules and costs as they read on the dates shown. It is general information for planning and is not a guarantee of admission, a prediction of any decision, or immigration, legal or financial advice. Check each linked source and talk to your school counselor.
